Collagen bundles

Pulmonary arterial effects. Cigarette smoke, administered to 2- and 3-month-old rats at a dose of one cigarette 10 times a day, increased significantly the volume fractions of the fibroblasts, the collagenous bundles, and the elastic laminae of the pulmonary arteries. The volume fractions of smooth muscle cells and the remainder were decreased significantly in both groups compared to controls. An increase in the stiffness of the pulmonary arteries was found in both the 2- and 3-month smoke-exposed rats . ... [Pg.329]

A solitary fibrous tumour was first described in pleural tissue by P. Klemperer et al. in 1931. Meanwhile, this rare entity has been reported in various organs, with the liver being affected in 26 cases. The tumour shows cellular areas (consisting of bundles of spindle cells arrayed haphazardly or in a storiform pattern) and relatively acellular areas (containing abundant collagen bundles). There is evidence of cellular atypia, mitotic activity and ectatic vessels. This tumour possesses malignant potential with the ability to metastazise. (134)... [Pg.760]

Figure 3. The early stages in the development of a sulphur mustard vapour injury in the Yucatan miniature pig at 24 h post-exposure. The cells comprising the epidermis (E) already show advanced degeneration, nuclear pyknosis and focal cytoplasmic vacuo-lation. The individual collagen bundles of the dermis (D) are forced apart by the accumulation of oedema fluid. Note the heavy acute inflammatory cell infiltrate throughout the dermis (D) and the epidermis (E) is fo-cally separating from the underlying papillary dermis (indicated by arrows) (Harris Haematoxylin Eosin x 200). Peritoneal biopsies showed a nonspecific inflammatory reaction with fibrous tissue comprising layers of coarse collagen bundles interspersed with the visceral peritoneum. [Pg.399]

Ultrastructural pathological features of brain AVMs were also studied but consist only in the disorganization of collagen bundles within nidal vessels walls (Wong et al. 2000). [Pg.55]

FIGURE 1. Electron microscopy of 30-day chick aorta. Animals were fed a standard diet (a) or a diet supplemented with 0.2% ascorbic acid from hatching (b). Chick aorta is composed of layers of smooth muscle cells (SMC) among which there are several elastic fibers (E) and few collagen bundles (C). Vitamin C seems to cause an increase in collagen bundle deposition and a decrease in elastic fiber assembly. Bar 1 xm. [Pg.256]

FIGURE 3. Morphometric analysis of the rat aorta in 50-day-old animals grown, at weaning, on a standard diet or on a standard diet plus 10% ascorbic acid added to the water. Treatment causes an increased deposition of collagen bundles and reduced amounts of elastic fibers, whereas no significant changes were observed in the cellular component or in the remaining extracellular matrix. [Pg.257]
