Cold Elixir

NOTE Alcohol is an ingredient in many OTC and even some prescription medicines. The amounts are modest in most cases, but a few reach concentrations of 40% or 50% proof. Cough and cold elixirs are the most likely sources, but some vitamin tonics and laxatives also contain alcohol. 

Ninth Elixir Cold Elixir (handan). The Ninth Elixir is made with realgar, orpiment, laminar malachite, arsenolite, and magnetite. The crucible is luted with a layer of Mysterious and Yellow, a layer of Mud of the Six-and-One, and a layer of worm excreta and yellow soil (huangtu). The ingredients are placed in the crucible with the Liquid Pearl liuzhu, i.e., the Mysterious and Yellow) and are heated for nine days. 

The Ninth Elixir is called Cold Elixir (handan). Regularly use a red earthenware crucible. As in the method for compounding the Flower of Cinnabar, lute it with the Mud of the Six-and-One. Make the crucible three-tenths of an inch thick both inside and outside, and let it dry. Take one pound each of Imperial Man (realgar). Imperial Woman (orpiment), laminar malachite, arsenolite, and magnetite, and pound them separately until they become powder-like. [14a] As in the method of the Flower of Cinnabar, first coat the crucible of the Six-and-One with the Mysterious and Yellow. Then place in it one pound of Liquid Pearl, and cover it with the Imperial Man, the Imperial Woman, the laminar malachite, the arsenolite, and the magnetite.

At the end of this process you will have the Alchemical Elixir at its first stage an oily substance when warm and a solid substance when cold. This process can be continued by recalcining and a repetition of the circulation process. Each time the potency is increased. A further step is by placing the Sulphur, Salt and Mercury combined into a glass jar and sealing it, leaving it in a moderate heat for digestion. A stone... 

However, Mitchell has a series of chapters about Old Mr. Hood, who was 93 years and intended to live to 115. Mr. Hood s diet was composed of finfish and shellfish, which was not only good to eat, but an elixir. Mr. Hood hung aroimd the Fulton Street fish market, a whiff of which he said would knock a cold in its tracks. He also told about an old dray horse that was surreptitiously fed oysters and became uncontrollable. In fact, for the few in the know, horse racing was occasionally fixed, reportedly by feeding one of the horses a batch of oysters ahead of time. 

The Jabirian alchemists also believed that metals were ultimately composed of the four Aristotelian elements earth, water, air and fire, and in consequence possessed the qualities of coldness, hotness, dryness and moisture in varying proportions. They adopted a rational approach to the problem of transmutation. A base metal had to be treated with a medicine or elixir to adjust the qualities present to coincide with the proportions of gold. The existing proportions of the qualities in a base metal were estimated by means of rather obscure calculations.
