Imperial Woman

Having separately pounded the eight minerals until they have become powder-like, place the cinnabar at the bottom, then the Imperial Man, [12a] the Imperial Woman, the laminar malachite, the alum, the arsenolite, the chalcanthite, and the magnetite. [Pg.183]

The Ninth Elixir is called Cold Elixir (handan). Regularly use a red earthenware crucible. As in the method for compounding the Flower of Cinnabar, lute it with the Mud of the Six-and-One. Make the crucible three-tenths of an inch thick both inside and outside, and let it dry. Take one pound each of Imperial Man (realgar). Imperial Woman (orpiment), laminar malachite, arsenolite, and magnetite, and pound them separately until they become powder-like. [14a] As in the method of the Flower of Cinnabar, first coat the crucible of the Six-and-One with the Mysterious and Yellow. Then place in it one pound of Liquid Pearl, and cover it with the Imperial Man, the Imperial Woman, the laminar malachite, the arsenolite, and the magnetite. [Pg.186]

Violetta is the supreme courtesan because she is whatever woman her current companion requires. Mention politics and she is Aspasia. Where Minerva is imperious, brilliant, all-knowing, and tolerates no disagreement, Aspasia is cultured and subtle, her voice infinitely persuasive. [Pg.47]

The second woman to teach in the Chemistry Department of IC was Margaret Carlton.78 Carlton had commenced her education at Birkbeck College before transferring to Imperial College, where she completed her B.Sc. in 1919 and her Ph.D. in 1925. [Pg.124]

Fox returned to Bedford, where she undertook research with Eustace Turner, completing a Ph.D. in 1930 on diaryl ethers. Having heard from her father about Lady Factory Inspectors, she obtained a position as Factory Inspector in Reading. She continued as a Factory Inspector until 1939, being the first woman to inspect large chemical works such as the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). [Pg.509]
