One way to make the importance of this clear is by including a business ethics provision in the tolling contract. The CMA Responsible Care initiative can be called out in such a provision and applied to both parties in the contract if they have both subscribed to its code of ethics. This is discussed further in Chapter 3, Mutual Agreements, Obligations and Contract Considerations. 

The tug-of-war between professionalism and public service on the one hand and serving the interests of large-scale business interests has shaped the social history of engineering in important ways (Layton, 1990), and it is likely to continue doing so for the foreseeable future. As one examines different codes of ethics, we will see different emphases depending on whether a particular professional society is weighted toward a business or a professional model of engineering practice. 

With the Code of Ethics suggesting that pharmacists not discuss drug therapies with their patients, the profession lost sight of the need for pharmacists to communicate effectively with patients and other health care professionals. As the number of hospital and chain pharmacies expanded, resulting in pharmacists being more likely to be employees rather than business owners, the importance of practice management skills was not stressed in schools of pharmacy. Ironically, studies such as the Dichter Report commissioned by the APhA revealed that consumers regarded pharmacists more as merchants than as health care professionals (Maine and Penna, 1996). 

Knowledge deep level comprehension of any one or all aspects or dimension of ethics (such as using ethical rules, codes of conduct in terms to impact human thinking and behavior, how ethical decision making impacts business value, ethical solutions for human dilemmas), and... 

Thus, building trust requires one party to make the first step. In our context, trust building instruments have to be taken by the slaughterhouses signalling the farmers that the enterprise is trustworthy and reliable. This requires the commitment of the whole enterprise, not only of those employees who directly communicate with farmers. Thus, internal changes such as introducing a code of ethics (Wieland, 1994,1999) have to be considered in a business environment which is characterized so far by distrust and opportunism. 

The best protection against fraud is to have a culture of trust and integrity supported by internal and external audits. No code of ethics is going to prevent large-scale fraud. A code of ethics can help people to understand the difference between a business (free) lunch and a bribe. 

Nevertheless, as you may already begin to imagine and as will be emphasized in the remainder of this chapter, codes of ethics are very useful in the business, government.
