A new brush-type CSP, the Whelk-0 1, was used by Blum et al. for the analytical and preparative-scale separations of racemic pharmaceutical compounds, including verapamil and ketoprofen. A comparison of LC and SFC revealed the superiority of SFC in terms of efficiency and speed of method development [50]. The Whelk-0 1 selector and its homologues have also been incorporated into polysiloxanes. The resulting polymers were coated on silica and thermally immobilized. Higher efficiencies were observed when these CSPs were used with sub- and supercritical fluids as eluents, and a greater number of compounds were resolved in SFC compared to LC. In 1995 potatoes and rice were stored in an abandoned road tunnel in Japan. At the end of the winter the tunnel was filled with snow that was covered with aluminum coated tarpaulins. The products were stored both beside the snow piles and under the tarpaulins. Rice from the same harvest was stored in a grain magazine and at a research centre for comparison. The rice in the tunnel had best quality after two month. Gill and Fitzgerald [481] determined picomolar quantities of mercury in seawater using stannous chloride reduction and two-stage amalgamation with gas-phase detection. The gas flow system used two gold-coated bead columns (the collection and the analytical columns) to transfer mercury into the gas cell of an atomic absorption spectrometer. By careful control and estimation of the blank, a detection limit of 0.21 pM was achieved using 21 of seawater. The accuracy and precision of this method were checked by comparison with aqueous laboratory and National Bureau of Standards (NBS) reference materials spiked into acidified natural water samples at picomolar levels. Further studies showed that at least 88% of mercury in open ocean and coastal seawater consisted of labile species which could be reduced by stannous chloride under acidic conditions. [Pg.200]
