In three-dimensional mixed-valence systems, electron transfer can manifest itself as electrical conduction, thermally activated. Most work continues to focus on the better known semiconducting materials such as silicon-boron or silicon nitride " (at low temperature), or organic crystals of the anthracene type (at high temperature),or redox polymer-coated electrodes. In the last-mentioned case, the importance of ion migration as well as electron transfer has recently been emphasized. In the mixed-valent Tl(I)3Tl(III)Cl6, conductivity and isotopic exchange studies have been taken to indicate that cation transfer is the principal charge-carrying mechanism, and not electron transfer as such. Continuous-length ceramic fibers used to reinforce CMCs must have optimal mechanical, physical, and chemical properties (described in Chapter 2). This chapter reviews the characteristics of fibers that are commercially available and fibers that are at an advanced stage of development. The performance characteristics of interest include stiffness (i.e.. Young s modulus), strength, thermal and electrical conductivity, creep and rupture resistance, oxidation resistance, all as a function of temperature, and strength and stiffness retention as a fimetion of serviee history. Among the conjugated polymers, polypyrrole (PPy) is the most representative one for its easy polymerization and wide application in gas sensors, electrochromic devices and batteries. Polypyrrole can be produced in the form of powders, coatings, or films. It is intrinsically conductive, stable and can be quite easily produced also continuously. The preparation of polypyrrole by oxidation of pyrrole dates back to 1888 and by electrochemical polymerization to 1957. However, this organic p>-system attracted general interest and was foimd to be electrically conductive in 1963. Polypyrrole has a high mechanical and chemical stability and can be produced continuously as flexible film (thickness 80 mm trade name Lutamer, BASF) by electrochemical techniques. Conductive polypyrrole films are obtained directly by anodic polymerization of pyrrole in aqueous or organic electrolytes. [Pg.242]
