Coating materials contamination

Applications that have been tested with good results are cases where nitrous oxide has been the air contaminant of current interest or used as a tracer gas. Other applications have been carbon disulfide in a rayon factory and styrene vapor, one of the volatile components from a surface-coating material.

Heating oil storage premises must be equipped with a collection trap so that any heating oil leaking from the tank cannot contaminate the soil. The interior of these premises must be painted with an officially approved coating material that is not dissolved or penetrated by heating oil. The coating must also cover cracks in the substrate. Multilayer systems based on waterborne acrylic resin dispersions are suitable for this purpose. 

In any event it is important to choose the right encapsulant to protect components from contamination, humidity and shock. Cyanoacrylates and epoxies are coimnonly used as encapsulating and conformal coating materials. 

Concrete sealants have often been used as a means of finishing industrial floors for spillproofing or wear resistance. These coating techniques have some applicability to PCB contamination situations on the principle that a sound coating material would at least temporarily inhibit human exposure in the work place. Several coating materials are commercially available and touted as specifically applicable to PCB decontamination.
