Coal-tar hair dyes

Hair colorants, the fourth class of color additives, may be used only to color scalp hair and may not be used in the area of the eye. Use of these colorants is exempt, that is, coal-tar hair dyes may be sold with cautionary labeling, directions for preliminary (patch) testing, and restrictions against use in or near the eye. The EDA diligently enforces the rules governing color additives and limits the use of, or even dehsts colorants deemed unsafe. The Hst of substances specifically prohibited for use in cosmetics is short. 

Manufacturers of cosmetics must print certain information on the labels of each product, that include the identity and function of the product the net quantity in metric units the name of the manufacturer or distributor and the address of the principal place of business country of origin for imported products any warnings or cautions necessary for the safe use of the product, especially mandatory ones such as those required for coal-tar hair dyes, etc. 

FDA considers cosmetic products to be neither adulterated nor misbranded when they are in compliance with the requirements of the FD C Act and its implementing regulations, as well as other applicable laws and regulations. A cosmetic product (with the exception of coal-tar hair dyes, discussed in Sections 4.3) containing an unlisted colour additive or a listed colour additive that does not conform to the requirements of its listing regulation is considered adulterated under the provisions of sections 601(e) and 721(a) of the FD C Act. 

In the United States the use of coal-tar dyes ia eye makeup is geaerally prohibited. The use of permanent and temporary hair colorants (Tables 16 and 17) and of organic dyes and their lakes is precluded. As a result, only iasoluble inorganic pigments can be used (Table 9). CoalTar Coal tar chemicals are found in makeup and many hair dyes. Certain colors are probable carcinogens others have been found to cause cancer when applied to skin. Nothingyou wantyour fetus basting in. 

Coal tar dyes, which are legal for hair dyes, are restricted from use around the eyes. They have caused blindness.
