Coaching style

In summary, the authoritative and coaching styles appear best and should be used as the primary tools for leading groups and individuals. The democratic and affiliative styles are also effective, but may present additional challenges when used. Lastly, the coercive and pacesetting styles may be effective, but should be used sparingly because they have an overall negative impact on the culture when employed routinely. [Pg.65]

Successful relationships require mentees to seek, welcome, receive and utilize input from mentors, often within psychologically testing enviromnents. Some related research by David Clutterbuck on coaching relationships found that the way in which learners approached the coach had a major effect on the style of help that they received. Training coachees to prepare how they presented their issues to the coach made it much easier to get the appropriate response in style terms. Our view is therefore that mentee training is every bit as important and necessary as mentor preparation. [Pg.259]

Football coach Tom Landry was known for his cool demeanor and kind nature. He was the first head coach for the Dallas Cowboys and held the position for over 20 years. His t-bars clearly reflect the winning style of the 70 s Dallas Cowboy teams. He passed away in 2000 to an outpouring of emotion from family and friends. Notice the fluid thinking in the T and L of his name and the high t-bars throughout the writing. [Pg.79]

In his travel diary Berzelius wrote, Hatchett himself is a very agreeable man of about forty to forty-five years. His father was a rich coach-maker, and the son, although a famous chemist at the time of his father s death, has continued to carry on the business. He is in very good circumstances, and lives in Roehampton on a little estate built in a fine Italian style and excellently maintained.. . . Close by his Italian villa he has a very well-equipped laboratory, but for a long time he has not worked (30). [Pg.385]

Two of these situational theories are the situational leadership theory and the contingency theory, in which the organizational environment is considered a major factor in leader effectiveness. The path-goal theory adds another extension to these situational theories — the concept of the leader as a coach and mentor. The concepts of mentoring and coaching are more fully discussed in Chapter 7. The concept of situational leadership as developed by Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard helps participants identify their own leadership styles, understand the four preferred styles available to them, and matches leadership styles to the needs of their followers (see Bennis and Nanus, 1985). [Pg.58]

Mandatory wearing of seat belts in cars has been in force in the UK for the last 40 years or so for front seat passengers and more recently, especially for children, for rear seat passengers. Similar regulations exist elsewhere in the world to the extent that all new cars are fitted with front and rear seat belts - an extranely large market. Public transport vehicles such as coaches and taxis in the UK are also fitted with belts. All civilian aircraft are fitted with lap-style belts. [Pg.336]

Use a coaching leadership style to pull information from versus push information to employees. This will enable you to understand the employees thoughts, feelings, needs, and goals. [Pg.99]
