Clover Trifolium spp

Grow green manures These are fast-growing plants, such as clover Trifolium spp) and Phacelia tanacetifolia, that protect bare soil, especially over winter on a vegetable plot, and can be dug in to improve its structure and fertility before planting. [Pg.198]

Eleven field experiments were conducted in five southeastern states in the United States over a 3-year period to determine the responses of forage legumes to Mo and lime applications (Mortvedt and Anderson, 1982). Alfalfa and five clover (Trifolium spp.) species were included in those experiments. Liming resulted in increased forage yields from soils where the initial soil pH was less than 5.5. Alfalfa yields generally increased with increasing soil pH (Table 11.6), but clover yields were less influenced by soil pH (data not shown). [Pg.177]

Like alfalfa, the clover family (Trifolium spp.) consists of perennial legume plants that fix their own nitrogen. However, they suffer several limitations as general production crops for molecular farming, such as restricted perenniality, low protein content and the presence of high levels of condensed tannins which interfere with protein extraction. Despite these disadvantages, clovers are forage crops and are there-... [Pg.195]
