Figure Bl.24.1. Schematic diagram of the target chamber and detectors used in ion beam analysis. The backscattering detector is mounted close to the incident beam and the forward scattering detector is mounted so that, when the target is tilted, hydrogen recoils can be detected at angles of about 30° from the beam direction. The x-ray detector faces the sample and receives x-rays emitted from the sample. Figure Bl.24.1. Schematic diagram of the target chamber and detectors used in ion beam analysis. The systematic study of alkanetliiols (CH2(CH2) -SH) witli different chain lengtlis revealed tliat for = 11 or greater closely packed layers are obtained witli a tilt angle of tire alkyl chains between 30 and 35° from tire surface... [Pg.2624]

The fdr studies reveal that the alkyl chains in SAMs of thiolates on Au(lll) usually are tilted 26-28° from the surface normal, and display 52-55° rotation about the molecular axis. This tilt is a result of the chains reestabUshing VDW contact in an assembly with - 0.5 nm S—S distance, larger than the distance of - 0.46 nm, usually quoted for perpendicular alkyl chains in a close-packed layer. On the other hand, thiolate monolayers on Ag(lll) are more densely packed owing to the shorter S—S distance. There were a number of different reports on chain tilt in SAMs on Ag(lll), probably owing to different amounts of oxide, formed on the clean metallic surface (229,230,296,297). In carefully prepared SAMs of alkanethiolates on a clean Ag(lll) surface, the alkyl chains are practically perpendicular to the surface. [Pg.542]

Tilting-Disk Check Valves These valves (Fig. 10-160) may be installed in a horizontal line or in hnes in which the flow is vertically upward. The pivot point is located so that the distribution of pressure in the fluid handled speeds the closing but arrests slamming. Compared with swing checkvalves of the same size, pressure drop is less at low velocities but greater at high velocities. [Pg.969]

The power turbine is free (i.e., the power turbine is not physically coupled to the gas generator but is closely coupled to the gas generator by a transition duct that transports the gas From the gas generator to the power turbine). The power turbine is an industrial-type turbine in design characterized by heavy wall casings, hydrodynamic (tilting... [Pg.2507]

FIGURE 10.37 Gap Juoctioos consist of hexameric arrays of cylindrical protein subunits in the plasma membrane. The subunit cylinders are tilted with respect to the axis running through the center of the gap Junction. A gap Junction between cells is formed when two hexameric arrays of subunits in separate cells contact each other and form a pore through which cellular contents may pass. Gap Junctions close by means of a twisting, sliding motion in which the subunits decrease their tilt with respect to the central axis. Closure of the gap Junction is Ca -dependent. [Pg.320]

Place the mouthpiece into the mouth, close the lips tightly or position the mouthpiece 2 to 3 finger-widths from open mouth and tilt the head back. [Pg.344]

Hindered Rotation (Figure 4b). This mode characterizes the orientational energy associated with the bond. For HoO the tilt energy Is very small ( . 1 eV) until the protons get close to the surface and the Coulomb repulsion takes over abruptly, resulting In a... [Pg.398]
