Clonidine contraindications

Antihypertensive drugp are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the individual dm. When an antihypertensive is administered by a trans-derrnal system (eg, clonidine), the system is contraindicated if the patient is allergic to any component of the adhesive layer of the transdermal system. Use of the angiotensin II receptor antagonists during the second and third trimester of pregnancy is contraindicated... 

Centrally acting sympatholytics (e.g., clonidine) and calcium channel antagonists (e.g., diltiazem) may be useful for symptom control when contraindications to /3-blockade exist. 

The most common side effects of clonidine are constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dryness of mouth, and unusual tiredness or weakness. However, there are more severe side effects that clinicians and patients should be aware of, such as allergic reaction, decreased heart rate, or unusually elevated or decreased blood pressure, as well as contraindications and drug interactions that should be evaluated prior to prescription. 

Beta-biockers/Other sympathetic nervous system suppressants - When beginning therapy, the -blocker dosage should be equal to 80 to 160 mg/day propranolol in divided doses. If -blockers are contraindicated, use methyidopa 250 to 750 mg twice daily give for at least 24 hours before starting minoxidil due to delay in onset. Clonidine may also be used to prevent tachycardia induced by minoxidil usual dosage is 0.1 to 0.2 mg twice daily. 

Contraindications Hypersensitivity to apraclonidine or clonidine or any component of the formulation.

In patients in whom estrogen replacement therapy is contraindicated, such as those with estrogen-sensitive tumors, relief of vasomotor symptoms may be obtained by the use of clonidine. 

Apraclonidine is contraindicated in patients sensitive to clonidine and those taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Caution should be exercised in patients with severe cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. The possibility of vasovagal episodes exists during laser surgery, particularly in patients with a history of such events. 

Clonidine, tricyclic antidepressants md antipsychotic agents (e.g. risperidone, sulpiride) may have a role in ADHD where methylphenidate and dexamfetamine are contraindicated or have failed to produce benefit. 

Tizanidine may increase the effects of antihypertensive drugs. There are two case reports of severe hypotension with iisinoprii. The manufacturer of tizanidine contraindicates the concurrent use of 02-adrenergic agonists (e.g. clonidine).
