The TCA mask is not the easiest " or safest of peels, as it is not possible to check in real time whether the TCA is penetrating too deeply under the mask. It does, however, make application a little easier for doctors who doubt their ability to apply a superficial TCA peel evenly. We can therefore conclude by saying that TCA masks are easy to apply but difficult to monitor. Even if chelation makes the clay mask less aggressive, it is on the whole not as safe as an open TCA peel, which can be monitored at all times. My experience with a TCA mask preceded by a glycolic acid mask is in the context of a regular medium-depth TCA peel to the papillary dermis.

To minimize clay dust inhalation, it is best to buy premixed clay. Potters should change clothes before leaving their work area. Fresh clay should be used to minimize bacteria and mold growth. To avoid median nerve damage and resulting carpal tunnel syndrome, the potter s wrist should be unflexed frequently. A face mask can be worn when clay dust is present. 

To reduce the chance of inhalation of dust, cover the spill with a 1 1 1 mixture by weight of soda ash, clay cat litter (bentonite), and sand. Wear protective gloves, goggles, laboratory coat, and a dust mask. Scoop the mixture into a plastic container, label, and send for disposal by burning.4,5... 

Beyond facial creams, facial masks are usually concentrated partide suspensions, and are used to treat and refresh facial skin. The particles are usually either kaoli-nite, Fuller s earth, or illite ( green clay ) or other days. The particles are intended to act as exfoliants and also to adsorb oils from the skin. Other additives span a wide range of materials, including essential oils, vitamins, fruits and vegetables, scents, and pharmaceutical (cosmeceutical) additives, such as salicylic acid when added to treat mild acne. Body clays are like facial masks except that a higher concentration of clay is used in the suspension.

In this study, both the normal mode relaxation of the siloxane network and the MWS processes arising from the interaction of the dispersed nanoclay platelets within the polymer network have been observed. Although it is routine practice to observe the primary alpha relaxation of a polymeric system at temperatures below Tg, in this work it is the MWS processes associated with the clay particles within the polymer matrix that are of interest. Therefore, all BDS analyses were conducted at 40°C over a frequency range of 10 to 6.5x10 Hz. At these temperatures, interfacial polarization effects dominate the dielectric response of the filled systems and although it is possible to resolve a normal mode relaxation of the polymer in the unfilled system (see Figure 2), MWS processes arising from the presence of the nanoclay mask this comparatively weak process. 

Bentonite may also be used in oral pharmaceutical preparations, cosmetics, and food products, see Section 18. In oral preparations, bentonite, and other similar silicate clays, can be used to adsorb cationic drugs and so retard their release. Adsorbents are also used to mask the taste of certain drugs. Thus, the secant relationship (4.20) with the angular definition modified for aluminosilicates (MacKenzie et al. 1985) has been used to shed light on the possible existence of a Si-Al spinel suggested to form when the clay mineral kaolinite is heated to 980°C. On the basis of the known structure of the closely-related 7-alumina spinel, the T-O-T angle of the postulated tetrahedral Si site in such a structure predicts a chemical shift of - 79 ppm for this site. Such a resonance would normally be masked by the broad resonance of the amorphous Si02 also present, but when this material was selectively removed by leaching with KOH solution, the predicted Si peak was detected (MacKenzie et al. 1996) (Figure 4.13). Two experimental methods have been described recently which should help the analysis of phospholipids. Details of a high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the rapid separation of phospholipids have been published, and hector-ite clay matrices have been used to stabilize phospholipid bilayers so that their vibrational spectra can be measured. The bilayers are incorporated into the clay to form ultra-thin, self-supporting films about 25 wm thick, and although some regions of the spectrum are masked by vibrations due to the clay, vibrations due to both the phosphoryl head-group and the acyl chain can be observed. 

The alkoxyalkylation reaction of carbonyl compounds can be considered as an orientated cross-aldol condensation between two masked carbonyl compounds, an acetal and a silyl enol ether. The key step involves the formation of an electrophilic species by reaction of the acetal with catalytic amounts of a Lewis acid and the right catalyst can lead to excellent diastereo- and enantio-selectivities.
