Conventional drill collars are made with uniform outside diameter and with slip and elevator recesses. Slip and elevator recesses are designed to reduce drill collar handling time while tripping by eliminating lift subs and safety clamps. However, the risk of drill collar failure for such a design is increased. The slip and elevator recesses may be used together or separately. 

Efficient stirring in the flasks A and B is provided by means of suitably sized Teflon-covered magnetic followers fitted with half-inch Teflon collars the magnetic stirrer units serve also to further support the apparatus which should be securely clamped to a rack. 

After compaction and once the metal extension collar is removed, the soil material is flattened by means of a straightedge (knife or spatula) until it is even with the top of the mould. Afterwards, the soil specimen with the steel mould is inverted and clamped on a perforated base plate (a coarse filter paper is added to the interface of the perforated base plate and soil specimen). Sufficient annular weights (usually three) are added on the compacted soil material in the mould in order to produce a surcharge equal to the weight of the overlying layers. Soil material, mould and surcharge weights are immersed in water (water level shall be 25 mm above the specimen s surface). At the same time, a tripod with a dial indicator is placed over the mould and its initial indication is recorded. The whole system remains undisturbed for 96 h. 

Remove the shaft brattice (screens), and install access platforms where necessary including the tail rope clamping beams in the sub collar. 

Position the conveyance (on the side where the SOLD is to be clamped and nearest the friction winch) above collar level to have access to the tail rope attachments.

The container is symmetrical and may be used from either end. It is centered to the container support in an annular groove. The container is held in the holder by a bayonet lock. When dismounting the container, the crosshead is lowered until the stroke limiting collar / makes contact. Then the clamping bolts are screwed in tap-holes specially provided for this purpose in the container, and with the crosshead moving up the container is lifted out. The container-holder is provided with a resistance heating system to heat the relatively small container. Its outer jacket is well insulated to prevent thermal losses.
