Chronic active hepatitis nitrofurantoin

Intrahepatic cholestasis and hepatitis similar to that seen in chronic active hepatitis can rarely occur fatalities have been reported. Nitrofurantoin can interfere with immature red blood cell enzyme systems found in babies less than 1 month of age and in nursing infants. This leads to cellular damage and anemia. Nitro-... [Pg.522]

The FDA warns that rare and sometimes fatal hepatic reactions to nitrofurantoin may occur and that the onset of chronic active hepatitis maybe insidious, Patients should therefore be monitored periodically using LFTs. The development of hepatitis warrants permanent discontinuation. [Pg.6]

Chronic active hepatitis may develop with prolonged use of methyldopa, isoniazid, dantrolene and nitrofurantoin. [Pg.654]

Hatoff et al. (1979) report a case of chronic active hepatitis in a HLA B 8-positive 27-year-old female patient after nitrofurantoin (Nole 1981). Agranulocytoses after nitrofurantoin have also been described (Palva und Lehmola 1973). In 12 of 20 patients antinucleic antibodies were seen, gammaglobulin was increased, and antibodies against smooth muscle appeared. All patients were negative to HBsAg. [Pg.529]

Eosinophilia was not observed. In one patient pulmonary fibrosis was seen, in another pulmonary infiltrates. In one patient with chronic active hepatitis a specific lymphocytic transformation was observed within 3 months after the beginning of therapy with nitrofurantoin, in another patient the authors observed immune complexes of polyclonal IgG antibodies and autologous albumin. Some patients, all women, had HLA B 8. [Pg.530]
