This is especially true in industrial and urban areas. Fig. 87 shows a paint containing Chrome Yellow, which was subjected to a test as described in Section 1.6.2.2 treatment with 1 N sulfuric acid for one hour at 70°C. The distinct color change on the circular test area is accompanied by a considerable gloss reduction. In the corresponding lead chromate-free system, it is only the binder that is affected, which reduces the gloss the color value on the other hand is retained. 

The yellow color of urine is due to uro-chromes, which are related to the bile pigments produced by hemoglobin degradation (see p. 194). If urine is left to stand long enough, oxidation of the urochromes may lead to a darkening in color.

Chrome yellow pigments stabilized with a large amount of silicate play a major role in the production of colored plastics (e.g., PVC, polyethylene, or polyesters) with high temperature resistance. Incorporation into plastics also improves their chemical resistance to alkali, acid, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide.

Color Pigments. Chrome yellow is the leading inorganic color pigment. It is used primarily in traffic-marking paint for roads and highways The yellow, red, and brown versions of iron oxide also are important and are used in a variety of industrial and architectural coatings. 

Smoke shells and rockets are used to produce smoke clouds for military signaling and, in daylight fireworks, for ornamental effects. The shell case or rocket head is filled with a fine powder of the desired color, which powdered material need not necessarily be one which will tolerate heat, and this is dispersed in the form of a colored cloud by the explosion of a small bag of gunpowder placed as near to its center as may be. Artificial vermilion (red), ultramarine (blue), Paris green, chrome yellow, chalk, and ivory black are among the materials which have been used, but almost any material which has a bright color when powdered and which does not cake together may be employed.
