Chopping tools

At the coastal sites, graywacke and quartzite cobbles were used extensively in the production of large crude chopping tools, whereas the finegrained materials, including rock crystal quartz, were used to produce microlithic assemblages. These small tools are generally assumed to have been hafted as barbs or projectile points. [Pg.28]

At the inland site of Fiais, the absence of a local source of river or beach cobbles probably accounts for the limited importance of quartzite and gray-wacke at the site. Large cobble chopping tools made of these materials are absent from the site. Flaked rock crystal quartz is common at Fiais, a fact suggesting that these crystals may occur naturally in the area (6). [Pg.29]

Clactonian chopping tools are named after the British site of Clacton-on-sea, where there is also the earliest definitive evidence for wood technology in the prehistoric record—the wood was shaped using flint tools. [Pg.17]

A carpenter is a person who has to solve a variety of problems in the physical world by using tools to build, repair, and maintain things. A good carpenter, one who is competent at a variety of jobs, has many tools available and knows how to use them. He has hammers, saws, rulers, squares, nails, chisels, and so forth. He uses the saws to cut, not to hammer the hammers to drive nails, not to chop through boards. A poor carpenter would be one who doesn t have the necessary tools to do the job, or who can t improvise adequately from the tools he does have. A poor carpenter could also be one who has the necessary tools but doesn t know how to use them properly, or, for whatever reasons, won t use them properly. [Pg.12]

The type 1 TLS/CHOP chimeric transcript is a result of the above-mentioned t(12 16) and is a very sensitive and specific molecular alteration for the myxoid/round cell liposarcoma entityOikawa and colleagues have developed a monoclonal antibody to this fusion transcript, which they claim is highly specific and sensitive with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue. However, there is no literature on its use. As a diagnostic tool, this is a good example of a genomic application of me. [Pg.119]

So, before the rent is paid, the City Solicitor places a small chopping block on the table. A clerk hands him a bundle of sticks. Then, having chopped some with the billhook and some with the hatchet, he presents both tools to the King s Remembrancer, who formally accepts them as payment of the Shropshire rent. A written acknowledgment follows later. Actually the Crown only gets the billhook and hatchet each year. The horseshoes and nails are kept to serve as hardy ceremonial annuals. [Pg.288]
