Chlorophyll chemoprevention

Dashwood, R.H. et al., Chemopreventive properties of chlorophylls towards aflatoxin Bp A review of the antimutagenicity and anticarcinogenicity data in rainbow trout, Mutat. Res., 399, 245, 1998. [Pg.48]

Naturally occurring compounds such as phytochemicals, which possess anticar-cinogenic and other beneficial properties, are referred to as chemopreventers. One of the predominant mechanisms of their protective action is due to their antioxidant activity and the capacity to scavenge free radicals. Among the most investigated chemopreventers are some vitamins, plant polyphenols, and pigments such as carotenoids, chlorophylls, flavonoids, and betalains. Resolution of the potential protective roles of... [Pg.3]

Harttig, U. and Bailey, G.S. 1998. Chemoprevention by natural chlorophylls in vivo Inhibition of dibenzo[a,l]pyrene-DNA adducts in rainbow trout liver. Carcinogenesis 9 1323-1326. [Pg.930]

Anticarcinogenic Activity and Chemoprevention of Cancer The first studies relating chlorophylls with cancerous processes date from the 1930s to the 1940s, when accumulations of porphyrin derivatives were detected in sarcomas and carcinomas of the breast. Current fines of research focus on the preventive activity exhibited by chlorophyll derivatives against tumor development. An exhaustive review of the anticarcinogenic activity of chlorophyll compounds was published in 1997 by Dr. Dashwood [46]. [Pg.347]
