During ripening of non-climacteric fruits like citrus, the process of colour change is named degreening and the natural loss of chlorophylls, accumulated into the chromoplasts of the epidermis (flavedo) and vesicles, and the concomitant manifestation and new biosynthesis of carotenoids, generally occurs very slowly (Eaks 1977). [Pg.267]

Fig. 5. The rate of chlorophyll accumulation in etiolated seedlings exposed to continuous light for 5 d. Wild type, lut2, abal and Iul2aba I etiolated tissue culture-grown seedlings were vernalized, germinated in the dark for 3 d and then transferred to continuous light. At each time point, 2 replicate extracts of 10 pooled seedlings were analyzed and the chlorophyll content expressed on a per plant basis (pg/seedling). Standard deviations greater than the size of the symbol are shown. Fig. 5. The rate of chlorophyll accumulation in etiolated seedlings exposed to continuous light for 5 d. There are studies that indicate a particular mode of action as a natural algicide, without elucidating that it is a primary site. For example, Kida [140,141] reported that the Streptomyces purpeofuscus product 7-deoxy-D-glycero-D-glucoheptose inhibited chlorophyll synthesis in the green alga Scenedesmus obliquus. Yet, only chlorophyll accumulation was measured. Phytotoxins with many other sites of action could cause a similar effect. [Pg.373]

Photooxidation of the chlorophylls as a consequence of the absence of carotenoids, which have a protective function,is hypothesized to cause the bleaching effect in some systems (, ). However, simultaneous inhibition of carotenoid and chlorophyll accumulation has been demonstrated in other systems (7 ). ... [Pg.100]

The independence of the development of A/B phosphorylation capacity from the accumulation of chlorophyll can be shown more easily and dramatically. Figure 9 shows the courses of development of A/B phos-phorylating capacity and of chlorophyll accumulation in dark-grown maize exposed to light for 1 min and then returned to darkness. A/B activity rises for about 8-10 h after plants have been returned to darkness. On the other hand, chlorophyll accumulation continues for only about 2-4 h following brief exposure. Again, these two processes appear to be independent. Chlorophyll is not filling the holes. [Pg.220]
