Chlorogenic acid echinacea

In this chapter, we will discuss in brief about caffeic acid and compounds derived from it. Caffeic acid is regarded as the commonest of phenolic compounds distributed in plant flora, ft is produced by hydroxylation of cinnamic acid. Caffeic acid is distributed in Coffea arabica, Echinacea purpurea and Cichorium intybus. Qunic acid is the degradation product of caffeic acid. Chlorogenic acid is a dark coloured pigment and is most abundant phenolic compound in plants next to caffeic acid. It is known to cause allergic dermatitis among humans.

Consumer Reports analyzed 12 echinacea products in the March 1999 issue, using a standard set by industry. Although the standard some manufacturers use is 4% phenolic compounds (caffeoyl-tartaric acid, chlorogenic acid, cichoric acid, and echinacoside), only three products, Vita-Smart by American Fare , One-A-Day Cold Season by Bayer, and Echinex by Sunsource approached this standard at 4.5%, 4%, and 3.9%, respectively. There was also variation among different bottles of the same brand (Anonymous, 1999).
