The checkers identified the two major impurities as p-bromophenyl vinyl sulfide (see Note 5) and 2-chloroethyl phenyl sulfide by GCMS analysis. 

Lecher and his co-workers39,40 obtained pure 2-chloroethyl phenyl sulfide, b.p. 122°/13 mm (14.6 g), by leading ethylene, with exclusion of moisture, into a solution of benzenesulfenyl chloride (15 g) in carbon tetrachloride (80 ml) until this was decolorized and then distilling the product in a vacuum. 

The ethylthio group seems to provide more anchimeric assistance than the phenylthio group, as evidenced by the observation that 2-chloro-ethyl ethyl sulfide solvolyses about 40 times faster than 2-chloroethyl phenyl sulfide. This may be ascribed to a decreased nucleophilicity of the arylthio groups by resonance delocalization of the electrons on sulfur into the aryl ring.
