Malches without Pkoapkorus of an excellent quality, and in the manufacture of winch there is not the slightest danger, are obtained from the following mixture 53.8 parts of chlorate of potassium, 10 of gum-Arabic, 3 of gum tra acanth, 6 of pyrolusite, 6 of ferric o de, 12 of pulverized glass, 5 of bichromate of potassium, 3 of sulphur, 1.2 of chalk, and sufficient water. [Pg.48]

The history of chlorate explosives goes back as far as 1788 when Berthollet attempted to make a new and more powerful gunpowder by incorporating in a stamp mill a mixture of potassium chlorate with sulfur and charcoal. He used the materials in the proportion 6/1/1. A party, had been organized to witness the manufacture, M. and Mme. Lavoisier, Berthollet, the Commis-saire M. de Chevraud and his daughter, the engineer M. Lefort, and others. The mill was started, and the party went away for... [Pg.357]

Manufacture of these explosives received great impetus in Germany and France during World War I, probably on account of the lack of nitrogen compounds. Composition The chief constituent, 60-80 per cent, is a chlorate or perchlorate of ammonium, sodium, or potassium. The other ingredients are combustible products such as charcoal, sulfur, aluminum powder, or mixtures of vegetahle meals uitro derivatives of benzene, toluene, naphthalene, phenol and as de-sensitizers solid hydrocarbons (paraffin) and castor oil may he added. The addition of the nitro compounds serves to improve the propagation. [Pg.46]
