Chitin fibers

One of the major uses of chitin fibers is as sutures for surgery. Another important use is the production of paper by applying deproteinized ground chitin particles from a homogenized suspension to a continuous paper making machine. 

In a further work, the same team developed the concept that in order to fibrillate the chitin, it would be advantageous to enhance the cationic repulsion existing between chitin fibers with the aid of acetic acid at pH 3. In fact, Ifuku et al. [35]...

Abstract— A method to prepare chitin fiber reinforced chitosan coating doped with silver sulfate was presented. Tensile strength, surface morphology and silver ion release was studied to provide an overall idea of the properties of the coating.

Silver sulfate was added into chitin fiber reinforced chitosan to improve its antimicrobial ability. As silver is a potent agent to kill or impair various types of gram positive or gram negative bacteria such as E. Coli. 

Thus 0.1 g of silver sulfate doped into chitin fiber reinforced chitosan would give the optimum tensile strength and also improved antimicrobial properties with the ability to release silver ions into the surrounding.
