Other techniques include oxidative, steam atmosphere (33), and molten salt (34) pyrolyses. In a partial-air atmosphere, mbber pyrolysis is an exothermic reaction. The reaction rate and ratio of pyrolytic filler to ok products are controlled by the oxygen flow rate. Pyrolysis in a steam atmosphere gives a cleaner char with a greater surface area than char pyroly2ed in an inert atmosphere however, the physical properties of the cured compounded mbber are inferior. Because of the greater surface area, this pyrolytic filler could be used as activated carbon, but production costs are prohibitive. Molten salt baths produce pyroly2ed char and ok products from tine chips. The product characteristics and quantities depend on the salt used. Recovery of char from the molten salt is difficult. [Pg.15]

Investigations with the modular multi-channel [28,98] and silicon chip [19, 56-62] micro reactors demonstrate that by exact temperature control the oxidation of ammonia can be run with increased and deliberately steered selectivity. A major application is provided by carrying out former high-temperature reactions in the low-temperature regime. In the case of ammonia oxidation in the chip micro reactor, the yield of the value product NO was actually lower in that regime. High density tungsten alloy machine chips are recovered by oxidation at about 850°C, followed by reduction in hydrogen at 700—900°C. Typically, the resultant powders are about 3- im grain size and resinter readily. There can be some pickup of refractory materials used in furnace construction, which must be controlled. This process is important commercially. For materials that may be contaminated with other metals or impurities, the preferred recovery process is the wet chemical conversion process used for recovery of tungsten from ores and process wastes.
