The chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say), is another serious pest of cereals, threatening grain sorghum production primarily in the tallgrass prairie regions of the Midwest. [Pg.467]

In another experiment, chinch bugs were initially placed into sealed J-cups containing a Parafilm-covered diet (greenbug diet) cap identical to those used for aphids. Chinch bugs readily located and fed upon the liquid through the membrane. This is the first example of chinch bug subsistence in the laboratory on an artificial diet. [Pg.467]

The control of scale insects, whiteflies, plant hoppers, aphids, chinch bugs, phytophagous beetles, flies, caterpillars, masquitoes, and stored product pests costs more than one-half billion dollars annually in the United States alone. In the last decade great progress was made in the commercial production of microbial insecticides which can partially replace synthetically prepared insecticides. [Pg.110]

Propoxur is a contact and stomach poison insecticide against ants, cockroaches, crickets, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, thrips, chinch bugs, etc. It is used in many countries on alfalfa, corn, soybeans, cotton, vegetables, and ornamentals. Diazinon and trichlorfon (Dylox 50% WP or Proxol 80 SP) are two insecticides frequently used by the commercial lawn industry because of their relatively low level of acute toxicity. Recommended rates for insect control may vary. Diazinon may be applied at 1 to 3 oz. active ingredient per 1,000 sq. ft. Trichlorfon is also used for control of insects at 2 to 3 oz. active ingredient per 1,000 sq. ft. Lawn insects controlled include chinch bugs, sod webworms, cut worms, army worms, and grubs. [Pg.288]
