Economic growth, China

In developing countries as well as China and Russia, the use of domestic washing machines has been increasing constantly over the years in line with economic growth. All over the world doing the laundry is one of the least popular domestic chores so consumers jump at the chance to make the tedious process easier. 

Globalization has not been associated with a dramatic increase in economic growth, as its advocates claimed it would, and indeed has been associated with a slowing of growth in many countries, with the major exceptions of China and India. 

Demand is set to grow approximately in line with GDP, and although this is low in the traditional markets of the USA and Europe, business is booming in Asia, with high single to even double-digit economic growth expected in China in years to come (see Chapter 1). Local and incumbent players both have some hard work to do before they can compete successfully here ... 

According to current estimates, approximately 17 percent of the world population, in other words 1.1 billion people, are reckoned to be potential consumers of products from the chemical industry1 . By 2015, the total number of consumers is expected to almost double to two billion due to rapid economic growth, mainly in the emerging economies. Almost half of these consumers will then live in Asia, and the number in China is likely to climb nearly tenfold to 700 million. 

In a period, such as the present time, of growth in P and C, the latter through economic growth in the developing world, notably India and China, (and an assumption that EC is not limitless and that we may not be far short of reaching its limit) we can only move towards sustainability through a reduction in B.
