Diamine oxidases belong to a widespread class of enzymes related to polyamine metabolism (Hill, 1971 Smith, 1985). Being a key enzyme in the metabolism of polyamines, essential for the growth and replication of all living cells (Bachrach, 1973 Walters, 1987), they catalize the oxidative deamination of a range of primary diamines (Fig. 2) (Equi et ai, 1991). Inhibitors of diamine oxidases are known to possess antimalarial, antitrypanosomal, antibacterial, and antifungal activities together with possible roles in cancer chemotherapy (Equi et ai, 1991).
