Chemopreventive potency

The population of Qidong has also been used to estimate the mutagenic potency of urine from smokers. A significant correlation was found with the number of cigarettes smoked per day and even with urinary cotinine [84]. By contrast, no increased mutagenicity was detected in the urines olF individuals treated by OPZ either daily (125 mg) or weekly (500 mg) [85]. These data provide an additional argument in favor of the efficacy of OPZ as a chemopreventive agent. 

MTBITC is the ITC derived from aliphatic GSL called glucoerucin and it is present in a large number of brassica vegetables in considerable amounts. It is of particular interest because it has been shown that SFN, which has been extensively studied and is one of the most potent chemopreventive ITC known to date, is oxidized in vivo to its structure analogue to MTBITC (Velasco et al. 2011a). Lamy and Mersch-Sun-dermann (2009) showed for the first time the inhibitory potency of this compound on the proliferation of human hepatoma HepG2 cells. 

Powdered caraway inhibited lipid peroxidation in stored chicken meat. An ethanol extract of the seeds showed greater potency. As a supplement in the diet of mice, the oil inhibited carcinogen-induced skin tumors however, best results were found from topical application of the oil.
