Alcohols Methanol of HPLC grade and iso-propanol (purity, 99.8%) from Ranbaxy, India, absolute ethanol (purity, 99.9%) from Dayman, UK and n-propanol of AR grade [Pg.335]

About 100 mL of alcohol was taken in a round bottom flask of 2 L capacity, fitted with a condenser, a guard tube filled with sodium hydroxide and a collecting vessel. About 5 g of dry magnesium turnings and 0.5 g of iodine were added to the alcohol and heated to 325 K till iodine disappeared. Heating was continued till the conversion of magnesium into its alkoxides and then about 900 mL of alcohol was added to it. The mixture was refluxed for a few minutes and distilled off.
