Chemical sugar-producing feedstocks

The above chemicals can be obtained by fermentation (qv) of other sugars. However, some compounds require sucrose as a unique feedstock. Examples are the polysaccharides dextran, alteman, andlevan, which are produced by specific strains of bacteria (48,54—56). Dextrans are used to make chromatographic separation media, and sulfated dextran derivatives are used as plasma extenders (41). Levans show promise as sweetness potentiators and, along with alteman, have potential as food thickeners and bulking agents in reduced-caloric foods (55,56) (see Carbohydrates). [Pg.6]

In bioprocesses, the feedstocks required to grow the catalysts and produce the chemical renewable are generally renewable resources, such as sugar from crops. Conversely, purely feedstocks chemical synthesis relies largely on non-renewable resources such as oil, coal and natural gas. It follows that as non-renewable resources dwindle, it is likely that biotechnology will become increasingly important to the chemical industry. [Pg.27]

Hemicellulose (or polyose) is primarily composed of xylan, a branched polymer composed of five-carbon sugar, xylose. Typical polymerization degree of hemicellulose is 50 - 200, which is shorter than the cellulose molecules. The acid hydrolysis of hemicellulose, (C6H10O5)n, produces mainly xylose (C6H10O5), which can be converted to furfural, a chemical feedstock, or can be fermented to ethanol. [Pg.79]

Wood is about 65—75% carbohydrate and has been considered as a potential source of ethanol for fuel. The carbohydrate material can be hydrolyzed to monomer sugars, which in turn can be fermented to produce ethanol. However, wood carbohydrates are expensive to hydrolyze. Hydrolysis with acids and enzymes is impeded by the crystalline structure of cellulose. Lignin interferes with processing, and hydrolytic by-products such as furfural, acetic acid, and derivatives of lignin and extractives can inhibit fermentation. Research is still being conducted on wood hydrolysis to develop a process that is economically sound. Furfural is a useful chemical feedstock and results from the dehydration of pentose sugars. It can be obtained in 9 to 10% yield from the dilute acid hydrolysis of hardwoods (75). [Pg.331]

Agricultural crops. These feedstocks include the currently available commodity products such as cornstarch and corn oil, soybean oil and meal, wheat starch, other vegetable oils, and any newly developed component of future commodity crops. They generally yield sugars, oils, and extractives, although they also can be used to produce plastics and other chemicals and products. [Pg.122]
