Chemical Society 1904 petition

The ACS High Polymer Forum, similar to today s Macromolecular Secretariat, with the help of C.S. Fuller and A.C. Elm, began meeting at the 19 16 Atlantic City ACS meeting. Through the efforts of the Polymer Forum, the Division of Paint, Varnish and Plastics Chemistry and others in 1948 a group of university and industry chemists petitioned the American Chemical Society to establish a separate division of Polymer Chemistry. After a probation period... [Pg.133]

The petition authors then noted the increasing contributions of women chemists and the willingness of the Chemical Society to publish their results ... [Pg.65]

Tilden, the then-President of the Chemical Society, proposed another tack. He circulated a petition in support of women s admission, signed by 312 of the most distinguished Fellows of the Society.55 Then in 1908, he co-sponsored with Henry Roscoe50 a motion that there be a poll of members on the issue.39 This motion passed, and a ballot was circulated accompanied by a list with six reasons to vote for admission and seven reasons to deny admission. [Pg.68]

Five years ago when some of us petitioned the Council of the Chemical Society to admit us to the Fellowship, the agitation in favour of Woman Suffrage was not prominently before the public. [Pg.75]

The petition recently presented to the Council originated within the Chemical Society itself and was signed exclusively by Fellows of the Society. [Pg.75]

Perhaps learning from Ramsay of the 1904 petition for the admission of women to the Chemical Society, Burke was a cosigner of that, and of the 1909 letter to Chemical News (see Chap. 2). In 1906, she was appointed as Assistant in the Department of Chemistry, being promoted to Assistant Lecturer in 1921. Donnan noted in her obituary ... [Pg.100]

When the women petitioned to join the society in 1902, they requested a reduced subscription due to their exclusion from the male-only social functions. Their petition was rejected and they were barred from membership in the society. In response, the women promptly organised their own Women s Chemical Society. The admission of women to the LUCS was raised in a subsequent year (probably 1908), but again they were turned down. It was not until 1912 that they were finally admitted and a society dance was instituted. In 1914, they had their first woman speaker, Dorothy Baylis (see below), one of the graduating class. The same year, the men-only Kneipe was dropped and a Smoking Concert took its place. For those males who still abhorred the presence of women, there was the refuge of the Research Men s Club.36... [Pg.182]

In her 8-year research career from 1896 to 1904, she authored 14 papers and several shorter communications. Fortey also signed the 1904 petition for admission of women to the Chemical Society. After 1904, she left science completely. She died in 1947. [Pg.204]

Thomas was an ardent supporter of women s rights, signing both the petition for admission to the Chemical Society in 1904 and the letter to Chemical News in 1909 (see Chap. 2). However, women at Cambridge had to be careful not to let their... [Pg.231]

Though pharmacy is regarded as a distinct profession, many academic women chemists saw pharmacy as one of their few employment options. As we will show, several of the women were also associated with the Chemical Society and/or the Institute of Chemistry, and two of them were signatories to the petition for admission of women to the Chemical Society (see Chap. 2). [Pg.383]

That the petition has been signed by 312 Fellows (including 10 past Presidents, 12 Vice-Presidents, and 29 Members of Council, past and present) among whom are 33 Fellows of the Royal Society and the Professors of Chemistry or Heads of Chemical Departments of nearly all the most important Universities and Colleges in the country. [Pg.68]
