Chemical processing industries standard industrial classification codes

The definition of the chemical processing industries (CPI) used in this table is the one used by Data Resources and Chemical Engineering in compiling their statistics on these industries. For several of the industries listed, only a part is considered to be in the CPI and data are presented for this part only. A list of the Standard Industrial Classification codes used to define the CPI for this table is given in Appendix C. 

The U.S. rubber processing industry encompasses a wide variety of production activities ranging from polymerization reactions closely aligned with the chemical processing industry to the extrusion of automotive window sealing strips. The industry is regulated by seven Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes [1] ... 

These facilities do not fall under the requirements of OSHA s Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals Explosives and Blasting Agents standard (PSM), 29 CFR 1910.119 (i.e., they are not gas plants, nor are they classified under Standard Industrial Classification code — SIC 1321) ... 

Estimated releases of 2 poimds (0.9 kg) of 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine to the atmosphere from one facility in 1996, accoimted for 100% of the estimated total environment releases (TR196 1998). These releases are summarized in Table 5-1. The TRl data should be used with caution because only certain types of facilities are required to report information to the Toxics Release Inventory only if they employ more than 10 full-time employees, if their facility is classified rmder Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes 20 through 39, and if their facility produces, imports, or processes 25,000 or more pounds of any TRl chemical or otherwise used more than 10,000 pounds of a TRl chemical in a calendar year (EPA 1997). 

Program 3 requirements apply to higher risk, complex, chemical-processing operations, to sources having a relevant process in one of nine named Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes listed in table 6.2, or having a process or processes subject to the OSHA PSM (OSHA, 1996).
