7 CHEMICAL POTENTIAL OF SOLVENT AND SOLUTE IN ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION 

The chemical potential is probably the most important characteristics of a solntion component and was introduced by Josiah Willard Gibbs. In common aqueons solutions (e.g., sea water), water is the solvent and dissolved salts are the solutes. The chemical potential of solvent (water), is almost always defined using the mole fraction concentration scale  

Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903) was an American scientist who made important theoretical contributions to physics, chemistry, and mathematics. He developed the mathematical background of thermodynamics and introduced the concept of chemical potential.
