Chemical equations for redox reactions

Balance chemical equations for redox reactions by the halfreaction method (Toolbox 12.1 and Examples 12.1 and 12.2). 

Some chemical equations for redox reactions, such as this reaction between copper and nitric acid, can be difficuit to baiance because one or more eiements may appear severai times on both sides of the equation. The oxidation-number method makes it easier to baiance the equation for this redox reaction. 

A redox reaction, such as the breakdown of glucose by O2 in biological cells, is the outcome of the loss of electrons, and perhaps atoms, from one species and their gain by another species we need to be able to write chemical equations for redox reactions and the corresponding reaction quotients.
