While the continual removal of atmospheric pollution by rain washing is beneficial, the removal of the protective corrosion product is obviously undesirable. The retention of the weathered surface is therefore usually preferred unless aesthetic considerations are of major importance, in which case abrasive or specialist chemical cleaning are effective. [Pg.665]

The use of hydroxyacetic/formic acid in the chemical cleaning of utility boilers is common. It is used in boilers containing austenitic steels because its low chloride content prevents possible chloride stress corrosion cracking of the austenitic-type alloys. It has also found extensive use in the cleaning operations for once-through supercritical boilers. Hydroxyacetic/formic acid has chelation properties and a high iron pick-up capability thus it is used on high iron content systems. It is not effective on hardness scales. [Pg.585]

Detergency is about the theory and practice of the removal of foreign material from solids by surface-active substances. This definition excludes pure mechanical cleaning. Also a pure chemical cleaning, e.g., by solvation of the foreign material, is not considered. In textiles oily substances usually attach to the fibres (animal fats, fatty acids, hydrocarbons, etc.). Also dust, soot, and other solid particles have to be removed in a washing process. In order to test the effectiveness of a surfactant, textiles are often polluted with standard dirt mixtures and cleaned with a standard washing procedure (launderometer). Conical Mixer Dryer The conical mixer dryer is a batch-wise operating unit commonly used in the pharmaceutical and specialty chemical industries for the drying of solvent or water wet, free-flowing powders. The process area is a vertically oriented conical vessel with an internally mounted screw. Figure 12-80 shows a schematic of the bottom drive conical mixer dryer. The dryer utilizes the heatable, internal rotating screw to provide agitation of the batch of material and thus improve the heat and mass transfer of the process.
