Chemical Education Material Study (CHEM study) in United States. [Pg.159]

In his career he was president of both the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Because of his belief in the importance of education, he tmdertook to reform the chemistry and science curricula of high schools. CHEM Study, a project designed to improve the teaching of chemistry at the high school level, became an internationally recognized educational resource under his direction. He was a founder of CEMS (Creat Explorations in Math and Science) and many other science education projects. [Pg.1137]

The Devil, it is said, is in the details. This seems to be very true of curriculum development. The early large-scale developments in the USA, notably the Physical Sciences Study Committee (PSSC, 1960), Harvard Project Physics (Ruflierford, 1970), Chem Study (Campbell, 1962), die Chemical Bond Approach (CBA, 1962), and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS, 1959), all hoped to have an influence well beyond the confines of die USA. So diey did, but more often through the fact of their existence than through direct adoption in other countries. [Pg.58]

On the post-Sputnik reorientation of secondary science education and its implications for chemical education, see III, Dede and Hardin, 1973 and III, Summerlin and Craig, 1966. The most widely-known of the chemistry curriculum improvement projects in this period was CHEM Study, an NSF-supported project begun in 1959 under the direction of J. Arthur Campbell (Harvey Mudd College) see III, Campbell, 1964, and III, Merrill and Ridgway, 1969. For a comprehensive review of NSF involvement in the reform of secondary science education, see III, CRS, 1975. See also III, Rhodes, 1977. [Pg.72]
