Charcoal, Animal Blood

When submitted to the same operation, ho found that the charcoal produced from starch, wheat, rice, gall-nnta, indigo, gluten, gelatin, albumen, blood, and skin, and, in fact, those derived from all animal matters, would not undergo combustion. [Pg.338]

A. Tiselius, Advances in Colloid Set., 1, 89 (1942) Kahlbaum active carbon, Carboraffin, Supranorit, Merck animal carbon, and Merck blood charcoal were found useful in these separations. Norit P-3, Carboraffin Supra, and Darco G-60 were used subsequently. [Pg.58]

Experiments on animal heat were made by Berthelot. The heat produced by the action of oxygen on the blood was investigated in 1889, and in 1899 it was shown (No. 19, p. 467) that the heat developed in the absorption of 32 g. (O2) of oxygen by the blood pigment is 15-2 k. cal., about one-seventh of that liberated in the combustion of charcoal. [Pg.473]

The American Indian also developed paint but exactly when is unknown possibly it was at the same time as the Greeks and Romans. Indians, like other early people, used mixtures of various natural oxides, charcoal, chalk, etc., to make paints. Indians also used animal fats, blood, egg white and yolks, as a binder. Although the Indians did not deeorate eaves (at least none have been found), the braves did decorate their faces with war paint, the exterior of the tepees were decorated. When the first settlers landed, they found the Indians still using the same paints. [Pg.16]
