Oxygen atoms produced by the ultraviolet dissociation of can take part in several reactions that create and destroy ozone. One set of reactions involving atomic and molecular oxygen is known as the Chapman reactions. The reactions are named after Sydney Chapman (1888-1970) who first proposed them in 1930. In one reaction, an oxygen atom combines with O to form ozone. Alternately, it can recombine with another oxygen atom to produce an oxygen molecule or react with ozone to produce two oxygen molecules. These reactions are summarized as... [Pg.262]

However, at the tropopause the temperature profile changes, increasing with altitude throughout the stratosphere. The reason for this increase is a critical series of photochemical reactions involving ozone and molecular oxygen. The Chapman cycle, reactions (l)-(4), hypothesized in the 1930 s by Sir Sydney Chapman,... [Pg.2]

A British scientist Sydney Chapman suggested the basic ideas of stratospheric ozone in the 1930s, which have become known as the Chapman cycle. Short wavelength UV hv) can dissociate molecular oxygen and the atomic oxygen fragments produced react with oxygen molecules to make ozone. [Pg.58]

The popular problems of kinetics theory is the derivation of hydrodynamic equations, in certain conditions, solution of f (r, v,t) transport equation is similar the form that can relate directly to continuous or hydrodynamic description. In certain conditions the transport process is like hydrodynamic limit. In 1911 David Hilbert was who ptropwsed the existence Boltzmann equations solutions (named normal solutions), and these are determinate by initial values of hydrodynamic variables it return to collision invariant (mass, momentum and kinetics energy), Sydney Chapman and David Enskog in 1917 were whose imroUed a systematic process for derivate the hydrodynamic equations (and their corrections of superior order) for these variables. [Pg.83]

In 1903, the British scientist, Sydney Chapman, first explained the chemistry of the formation of ozone in the upper atmosphere when he proposed what is now known as the Chapman cycle. Although Chapman s original proposal was quite speculative, modern measurements of a wide array of quantities support his hypothesis. The Chapman cycle begins and ends with oxygen, the more stable... [Pg.424]

Sydney Chapman was a mathematician. He devised the idea of the Chapman cycle while working on a mathematical theory of gases. [Pg.425]

In 1930, the English geophysicist Sydney Chapman (1888-1970) worked out the cycle of ozone formation and destruction in the stratosphere. There are four chemical reactions in the cycle ... [Pg.306]

As early as 1930 the famous British scientist Sydney Chapman [2] had proposed that the formation of odd oxygen Ox (=0 + O3) is due to photolysis of O2 by solar radiation at wavelengths shorter than 240 nm [Eq. (1)]. [Pg.18]
