Constit. of Chamaecyparis formosensis. Unstable oil. Misleading trivial name as it is not a nor derivative of Sesquibenihiol (see 4(15),1 l(13)-Eudesmadien-12-ol, E-01838). 

Isol. from oil of Myrtus communis, Darwinia grandiflora, Leptospermum lanigerum, Chamaecyparis formosensis and others. Oil. Bpu 103-104°. -1-45.5°. 

Several oxygenated derivatives based on pinane have been found to occur in woody parts. For example, myrtenol (100), myrtenal (101) and myrtenic acid (102) have been isolated from wood of Chamaecyparis formosensis. (-)-trans-Pinocarveol (103) is present in American gum turpentine. (+)-c/5 -Verbenol (104), its trans isomer, and (+)-tra/w-verbenone (105) are important components of frankincense from Boswellia cartevii (275 vol. Ill b, c, 296, 379). From the roots of Paeonia albiflora, a few highly oxygenated pinane derivatives (e.g., paeoniflo-rin, 106) have been obtained (223). 

Chamaecynane type (223) was first encountered with the characterization of C]4 sesquiterpenes - e.g., dehydrochamaecynenol (232) from Chamaecyparis formosensis (14). Some half dozen compounds with this stereochemistry are known at present and all of these are C14 compounds isolated from C formosensis. The other cis fused type, 224, was uncovered with the structure elucidation of (+)-occidentalol (233), isolated from the heartwood of Thuja occidentalis (368). The aromatic compound occidol (234) co-occurs with occidentalol in the Thuja wood. Several compounds of intermedeane type (225) are known at present and some of these have been isolated from woody tissues. Intermedeol (235) itself was first isolated from the Indian race of the grass Bothriochloa intermedia (95). (-)-Callitrisin (236) is a constituent of Callitris columellaris heartwood (59, 158).
