The above correlation (2-17) was developed by Walker et al. [ 1 ] as early as 1937, on the basis of experiments using the test system air/water. Spirals and ceramic Lessing rings... 

Deaerator. The deaerator was designed to reduce the amount of air dissolved in the feed to a value equivalent to 0.005 cc. of oxygen per liter of salt water feed. It is a two-stage unit. The feed at 65° F. is sprayed into a vacuum of 41.4 mm. of mercury and then flows over a packed bed of ceramic Raschig rings maintained at a pressure of 16 mm. Very little liquid is flashed, so the feed is cooled less than 1° in the deaerator.

Catalysts. The studies were focused on an industrial two-layer catalyst of varying activity. The catalyst was prepared in portions of 70 - 100 kg each. The upper layer contained less of the active mass than the lower (6 7 wt.% and 8 wt.% relative to the mass of the support, respectively). The active mass, consisting of V2O5, Ii02 (anatase) and admixtures was supported on a ceramic carrier in the shape of half-rings 10x6x2 mm.
