The ABS polymer is recovered through coagulation of the ABS latex. Coagulation is usually achieved by the addition of an agent to the latex which destabilizes the emulsion. The resulting slurry can then be filtered or centrifuged to recover the ABS resin. The wet resin is dried to a low moisture content. A variety of dryers can be used for ABS, including tray, fluid bed, and rotary kiln type dryers. [Pg.204]

In the precoat and body feed mode, filter aids allow appHcation of surface filtration to clarification of Hquids, ie, filtration of very dilute suspensions of less than 0.1% by volume, such as those normally treated by deep bed filters or centrifugal clarifiers. Filter aids are used in this mode with pressure filters. A precoat is first formed by passing a suspension of the filter aid through the filter. This is followed by filtration of the feed Hquid, which may have the filter aid mixed with it as body feed in order to improve the permeabiUty of the resulting cake. The proportion of the filter aid to be added as body feed is of the same order as the amount of contaminant soHds in the feed Hquid this limits the appHcation of such systems to low concentrations. Recovery and regeneration of filter aids from the cakes normally is not practiced except in a few very large installations where it might become economical. [Pg.390]

Fixed-Bed Centrifuges. The simplest of the fixed-bed centrifuges is the perforated basket centrifuge (Fig. 31) which has a vertical axis, a closed bottom, and a Hp or overflow dam at the top end. Some domestic machines of this type are ia use for straining vegetable or fmit juices. Air is compressed to modest pressures, typically 100 to 200 kPa ( 15-30 psig) with either a centrifugal or radial compressor, and mixed with superheated vaporized butane. Static mixers are normally employed to ensure good mixing. Butane concentrations are often limited to less than 1.7 mol 1 to stay below the lower flammable limit of butane (144). Operation of the reactor at butane concentrations below the flammable limit does not eliminate the requirement for combustion venting, and consequendy most processes use mpture disks on both the inlet and exit reactor heads. If the Hquid wets the soHd the clump density increases as gas is displaced from the interior. Sediment Volume. If the dispersion is unstable, the sediment bed will be quite deep and sedimenting particles will stick together where they first strike the sediment bed, thus forming an open stmcture with considerable occluded Hquid. If the dispersion is stable to reagglomeration, the particles will move freely past one another to avoid contact as long as possible. The result is a thin sediment bed with maximum soHds packing and minimum occluded hquid (12). Since dispersed particles setde more slowly than docs, centrifugation maybe needed to force sedimentation of small particles within a reasonable analysis time. [Pg.549]

The most reliable recycle reactors are those with a centrifugal pump, a fixed bed of catalyst, and a well-defined and forced flow path through the catalyst bed. Some of those shown on the two bottom rows in Jankowski s papers are of this type. From these, large diameter and/or high speed blowers are needed to generate high pressure increase and only small gaps can be tolerated between catalyst basket and blower, to minimize internal back flow. [Pg.60]

Ammonium sulfate is produced as a caprolactam by-product from the petrochemical industry, as a coke by-product, and synthetically through reaction of ammonia with sulfuric acid. Only the third process is covered in our discussion. The reaction between anunonia and sulfuric acid produces an ammonium sulfate solution that is continuously circulated through an evaporator to thicken the solution and to produce ammonium sulfate crystals. The crystals are separated from the liquor in a centrifuge, and the liquor is returned to the evaporator. The crystals are fed either to a fluidized bed or to a rotary drum dryer and are screened before bagging or bulk loading. [Pg.64]
