Cell-sheet accumulation

In order to enhance the osteoconductive property of the developed PCL/silanized tricalcium phosphate scaffolds, a carbonated hydroxyapatite-gelatin composite has been coated onto the scaffolds using a biomimetic co-precipitation process, which has been characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and XPS. Confocal laser microscopy and SEM images revealed a most uniform distribution of porcine bone marrow stromal cells and cell-sheet accumulation on the carbonated hydroxyapatite-gelatin composite coated PCL/silanized tricalcium phosphate scaffolds (4). [Pg.147]

This group of diseases is characterized by the accumulation of a specific isoform of the normal prion protein (PrP), termed PrPSc, which seems to be the main infectious agent. PrPSc is derived by a conformational change from the isoform of the prion protein PrPC. PrPSc is a copper-binding glycoprotein attached to the cell membrane of neuronal cells [21]. The PrPSc form is protease resistant, has a beta-sheet structure and possesses a tendency to polymerization [22]. [Pg.172]

Pi Z, Pi Pi Mmaiton, and Pi Md te are synthesized by the fiver in relatively normal amounts but are only partially secreted, resulting in accumulation within the endoplasmic reticulum of hepatic parenchymal cells and low plasma levels. As a result of a glu lys substitution in Pi Z, the reactive center loop on one molecule can insert into the P-pleated sheet of a second molecule, resulting in polymerization and retention within the pre-Golgi endoplasmic reticulum. Similar alterations have been shown to be present in Pi and Pi The amino acid substi-... [Pg.552]

Instrumentation. The experimental setup is similar to that employed for in situ X-ray diffraction. The material under investigation is pressed into a thin sheet and mounted together with suitable counter and reference electrodes into a silica cell. In order to decrease the large incoherent scattering contributions from protons in aqueous electrolyte solutions, deuterated solutions are used. In a typical study, the reaction mechanism of Ni(OH)2 (employed in nickel accumulators) was studied with neutron powder diffraction NPD [46]. A direct and continuous structural transformation of both the y- and jS-NiOOH phases into j8-Ni(OH)2 was observed during reduction with no direct relationship or discontinuity related to the transition from the first discharge electrode potential to the second one, which was located about 0.4 V lower. [Pg.241]

A heat exchanger is composed of heat radiation fins and a fan. The coolant flowing in the heat exchanger radiates heat out through the fins, and the radiated heat is sent out of the fuel cell system by the fan. The radiation fins are made with thin metal sheets with large surface areas in order to achieve high heat radiation efficiency. Without the fan, the air temperature around the fins will quickly get close to the coolant temperature after the fuel cell is running for a short time because the heat accumulates inside the fuel cell system s enclosure. Then, the heat that is able to radiate out of the fins will become smaller... [Pg.188]
