Although no simple model exists, capable of ad hoc prediction of thermodynamic properties of polyolefin solutions in undocumented cases, the treatments discussed here do supply a manageable mathematical framework that greatly reduces the need for extensive experimentation. 

Treatment — As with other toxin therapies, treatment is limited mainly to supportive management. Mechanical respiration support may be required in severe cases. An antitoxin has shown success in animal models, but no human data are available to date. No vaccine has been developed. Induction of vomiting may prove to be useful as part of the treatment program. In the case of biological contamination, the identification of risk became obvious by experience, the risk assessment was made unambiguous by epidemiology, and the immediate and obvious effectiveness of the risk management decisions demonstrated their wisdom in the absence of elegant quantitative risk extrapolation models and projections of costs per case averted. Costs of water treatment and distribution became trivial relative to almost all other essential commodities, and in the public expectation the biological safety of drinking water became axiomatic. 

One example of reversible metabohc encephalopathy is that seen in thiamine deficiency. Both animal models and humans with pure thiamine deficiency develop highly specific neurological symptoms. These symptoms can be reversed completely, or dramatically improved, often within hours, by the administration of thiamine. These results are instrumental in leading to the concept of metabolic encephalopathy , a disorder without structural brain changes. From a historical standpoint, there are increasing numbers of such disorders, which are amenable to successful treatment. Sadly, for example, in the case of kemicterus, managed health care has led to an increase in the number of cases due to the early release from hospitals of newborn infants after birth, even before the onset of jaundice.
