If the gas is cooled down, a C02-selective polymeric membrane may be used (cardopolymers and carrier membranes are especially interesting. Problem compression of exhaust gas may be needed see Section 4.3.1)... 

C02-selective polymeric membranes (cardopolymers, FSCs), CMS, mixed matrix, or biomimetic materials are potential membrane materials for this application. The purified methane can then be compressed to 300 bar and stored in tanks for fuel in the transport sector or for conversion to methanol used for FCs. 

Efforts in regard to understanding char formation mechanisms and improvements in the amount of char have been studied for systems such as polystyrene, cardopolymers, phenol-formaldehyde resins, aromatic polyamides and styrylpyridine based polymers. Increased char formation occurred when thermally stable thermally induced crosslinking structures occurred and/or thermally stable aromatic rings were produced. 

Crosslinking could be induced in polystyrene structures containing vinylbenzyl chloride as a comonomer which enhanced char formation. For the cardopol3nners, the phenolphthalein based polymers were shown to have increased char formation because of the rearrangement of the lactide group to a thermally stable ester crosslink. Although other cardopolymers showec improvements in flammability, the mechanisms were not explored. Vapor phase and condensed phase mechanisms were applicable for substituted phenolic resins but mechanisms for the latter were not elucidated.
