Carbon ring seals

In operation seal oil pressure is about 30-50 psi over the process gas pressure. The high-pressure oil enters the top and completely fills the seal cavity. A small percentage is forced across the carbon ring seal faces. The rotative speed of the carbon ring can be anywhere between zero and full rotational speed. Probably the most common seal is the restrictive ring type, normally used in the form of carbon rings. This seal controls leakage better than the non-floating labyrinth type, although it wears faster. The carbon ring seal does not tolerate dirt as well as the labyrinth seal. The carbon ring seal and the labyrinth seal may be ported for gas injection, ejection, or a combination of both. Any injection gas should be clean.

The dry gas seal has one of two types of barrier seal (seal between the bearing and dry gas seal) either a labyrinth or single or double carbon rings. Normally the seal system includes provision to supply buffer gas to the barrier seal, also known as a separation seal. The gas to this seal is referred to as separation gas. One reason for choosing the carbon ring style bander seal is to keep the separation gas usage to a minimum. The gas is normally nitrogen. The basic control is by a direct-operated pres sure control valve.
