Carbon black reduction

Antistats such as polyoxyethylenes (151,152) and A/-alkyl polycarbonamide (153) are added to nylon to reduce static charge and improve moisture transport and soil release in fabrics. These additives also alter the luster of fiber spun from bright polymer. Static reduction in carpets is achieved primarily by the use of fibers modified with conductive carbon black (see Antistatic agents Carbon, carbon black). [Pg.257]

Mesophase formation in coal-tar pitch is encouraged by a reduction of the natural quinoline-insoluble matter content, which resembles carbon black but is not optically anisotropic and is characterized by an atomic carbon hydrogen ratio of 4 1. In contrast, the atomic carbon hydrogen ratio of mesophase is about 2 1. [Pg.348]

Similar results were found by Bacsa el al. [26] for cathode core material. Raman scattering spectra were reported by these authors for material shown in these figures, and these results are discussed below. Their HRTEM images showed that heating core material in air induces a clear reduction in the relative abundance of the carbon nanoparticles. The Raman spectrum of these nanoparticles would be expected to resemble an intermediate between a strongly disordered carbon black synthesized at 850°C (Fig. 2d) and that of carbon black graphitized in an inert atmosphere at 2820°C (Fig. 2c). As discussed above in section 2, the small particle size, as well as structural disorder in the small particles (dia. —200 A), activates the D-band Raman scattering near 1350 cm . ... [Pg.138]

The studies by Biermann et al. [28] indicate that the carbon blacks used as the conductive matrix in Leclanche cells remain chemically inert, that is, they do not undergo oxidation during storage or discharge of the cell. However, Caudle et al. [29] found evidence that the ion-exchange properties of carbon black, which exist because of the presence of surface redox groups, are responsible for electrochemical interactions with Mn02. The extent of MnO, reduction to MnOOH depends on the carbon black (i.e., furnace black > acetylene black). [Pg.238]

Biopolymers have diverse roles to play in the advancement of green nanotechnology. Nanosized derivatives of polysaccharides like starch and cellulose can be synthesized in bulk and can be used for the development of bionanocomposites. They can be promising substitutes of environment pollutant carbon black for reinforcement of rubbers even at higher loadings (upto SOphr) via commercially viable process. The combined effect of size reduction and organic modification improves filler-matrix adhesion and in turn the performance of polysaccharides. The study opens up a new and green alternative for reinforcement of rubbers. [Pg.138]

In fact viscosity reduction of diene elastomer blends with QDI show an optimum based on mixer discharge temperature. Figure 16.13 shows the results of two experiments done on the 16 L scale. The viscosities represent the viscosity of the fourth stage of a multistage mixing experiment. These compounds were 60/40 blends of either BR or SBR with NR and contained 50 phr of N-234 carbon black. [Pg.499]

We have already referred to the Mo/Ru/S Chevrel phases and related catalysts which have long been under investigation for their oxygen reduction properties. Reeve et al. [19] evaluated the methanol tolerance, along with oxygen reduction activity, of a range of transition metal sulfide electrocatalysts, in a liquid-feed solid-polymer-electrolyte DMFC. The catalysts were prepared in high surface area by direct synthesis onto various surface-functionalized carbon blacks. The intrinsic... [Pg.319]

Viscosities of concentrated suspensions of carbon black in a white mineral oil (Fisher "paraffin" oil of 125/135 Saybolt viscosity) were measured with a Brookfield viscometer as a function of OLOA-1200 content. Figure 13 shows the viscosities of dispersions with 30 w%, 35 w% and 70 w% carbon black. In all cases the viscosity fell rapidly as the 0L0A-1200 content increased from 0 to 1%, then fell more gradually and levelled off as the 0L0A-1200 content approached 2%. In many respects the reduction in viscosity with increasing OLOA-1200 content parallels the conductivity measurements both phenomena are sensing the buildup of the steric barrier, and this steric barrier weakens, softens, and lubricates the interparticle contacts. As evidenced in foregoing sections, the particles are still flocculated but can be easily stirred and separated mechanically. The onset of electrostatic repulsion at OLOA-1200 contents in excess of 2.5% did not affect viscosities. [Pg.349]

Maye et al. studied gold nanoparticles supported on carbon black for ORR in both acidic and alkaline media.210 The gold nanoparticles were of a core-shell type where the particle consisted of a gold nanocrystal core of 1-6 nm in diameter that was surrounded by an organic monolayer shell.214 While the Au/C catalyst was found to be active for ORR, its activity was much lower than that of Pt/C, PtRu/C and AuPt/C. The electron transfer in 0.5 M H2S04 was reported as 2.9 0.2, indicating a mixed reduction pathway.210... [Pg.356]

The carbon emission reduction of the two considered storage options is calculated with reference to a conventional gas turbine or gas and steam turbine. The result is shown in Fig. 16.6. The emission reduction refers to 1 kWh surplus wind electricity. The black bars reflect the reference emissions of the conventional gas turbine (GT) and gas-steam turbines (GST). The other bars show the figures for the CAES and the hydrogen paths. The emissions that occur during the storage paths are marked in grey the emission reduction is visualised in grey and white stripes. [Pg.491]
