Calyx podatypa

Xestamines (19-26), Fig. (5) are structurally related to niphatynes A and B (1,2), and bear an A-methoxyl-7V-methylamino terminus. They were isolated from the haplosclerid sponges Xestospongia wiedenmayeri [13] and Calyx podatypa [14], and their structures elucidated by a combination of spectral and chemical methods. 

Isolation of xestamines D-H (22-26) from Calyx podatypa yielded two fractions, xestamines and their corresponding A -methylpyridinium salts [14]. It is interesting that these quaternary pyridinium salts exerted a moderate antibacterial activity against bacteria, that was about 40 times greater than the activity of the corresponding tertiary amines. 

Some alkylpyridinium compounds also show antifungal activity. Xestamines A-F (19-24) from Calyx podatypa were active against Candida albicans [14]. Haliclamines A (49) and B (50) were also reported to possess antifungal activity against Mortierella ramannianus 111... 

In 1991, another group reported isolation of xestamines A,B, and D-H (27a,b,d-h) from a Caribbean sponge, Calyx podatypa [129]. Spectroscopic data for 27a and 27b agreed with the literature values [128], Structures of 27d-h were determined with GC-HREIMS, HRFABMS, lH and 3c NMR, and synthesis of 27f from reaction of 27a with Mel [129],...

Xestamines A-H (19-26). The spongeXestospongia wiedenmayeri gave three C18, C14 and Cl 5 aliphatic medioxylamine 3-substituted pyridines (19-21), respectively [32]. 7V-methylpyridinium salts of the known xestamines were reported that have antimicrobial activities and were obtained from the Caribbean sponge Calyx podatypa [33].
