Menius did not use the term Nicodemite, which may well have been a Calvinist neologism. Instead he called Crotus an Epicurean, the term commonly used of men who lacked piety and did not care about religion or to denote scoffers, skeptics, and hypocrites (see chap. 3). The second chapter is devoted to a discussion of Boerhaave s Calvinism. Calvin s own work, in particular the Institutes of the Christian Keligion (1559), will be the startingpoint of an investigation into Calvinist ideas on creation, providence and the question of how man can come to tme knowledge. In turn this forms the basis of an evaluation of Boerhaave s Calvinist views concerning God s divine will visible in the creation as well as his views on the human mind. Boerhaave s ideas appear to be remarkably similar to those of Calvin.
