California common beers

In this chapter, we will include recipes for wheat beer in all its wonderous variations (including weizen, weissbier, and some of the American hybrids), California Common beer (or more precisely Anchor Steam look-alikes, since these beers all try to emulate one brand of a unique beer), and a couple examples of smoked beer, a style brewed commercially in Bamberg, Germany. 

Because California Common beers are trying to emulate a particular beer, it is appropriate to target that brand exactly. Anchor Steam is brewed to a gravity of 1.050 and a bitterness of 33 IBU. The color should be close to 12 SRM. 

This won second place in the California Common Beer category at the 1989 Upstate New York Homebrewers Association Members Only Mini-Contest. 

This is a hoppy, medium-bodied California Common beer. This brew made finals of American Homebrewers Association competition in 1992, but received no medals. It did win second place in the 1992 Red River Valley Fair Homebrew Competition. Judges in both competitions enjoyed the hop bitterness and flavoring, which is well-balanced.
