Excess calcium hydroxide is precipitated by usiag carbon dioxide and the calcium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, and calcium phosphite are removed by filtration. The filtered solution is treated with an equivalent amount of sodium sulfate or sodium carbonate to precipitate calcium sulfate or carbonate. Alginates, which are used as impression materials, are formed by the reaction of the sodium salt of anhydro-beta-d-mannuronic acid with calcium sulfate. Gypsum is a compound composed of calcium ions and sulfate ions. It is mixed with water to make plaster. Plaster is a mixture, not a solution. Gypsum is insoluble in water because the attractive forces among the ions in calcium sulfate are so strong that they cannot be overcome by the attractive forces exerted by the water molecules.
